Welcome to the Oxford Spires website!

We hope these pages will show you some of the activities we enjoy as part of Rotary International in Britain and Ireland (RIBI), Rotary District 1090, and as a small group of people who like to get involved in fun fundraising events and community activities. These events can support local, national and international charities as well as not-for-profit groups.

What is Rotary?

Rotary International is a worldwide organization of men and women who volunteer their time and talents to serve their communities at home and abroad. Its members provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations and help to build goodwill and peace throughout the world and in their local communities. It is also an inclusive organization with Rotarians worldwide coming from all races, cultures and creeds.

Have a look at Rotary's new "We're for Communities" video on YouTube. You'll see a few Spires members at exactly 1 minute into the film - for 3 seconds!

About us.

Although many Rotary clubs meet weekly for a meal, our club recognizes that this can be difficult for those with young families, limited spare time and budgets. Therefore we only meet twice a month. This format allows members to establish firm friendships within the club, without the meetings taking up too much of their spare time.

We are a mixed group with members living all over Oxfordshire and beyond - from Abingdon, Witney, Oxford, Bicester, Wallingford and Towcester. Most of us work full time, and some of us have young children so we appreciate that there can be a lot to balance in our lives. We therefore do our best to get the most out of, and put as much into, our Rotary involvement. We always ensure that the events we take part in are fun.

Our meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of each month, at the Red Lion in Islip, just to the northeast of Oxford. Public transport isn't especially good. However, if you contact us in advance, one of our club members may be able to give you a lift to the meeting.

We always welcome visitors at our meetings, particularly meal meetings which take place on the 4th Tuesday of the month. At these we generally have dinner and listen to a guest speaker.

Why not also visit our Pooh Sticks website where you will find details of the Annual World Pooh Sticks Championships. This was last held on Sunday 25th March 2012 at Day's Lock in Little Wittenham.

Our Meetings

These take place in the Red Lion in Islip at: 8pm on the 2nd Tuesday and 7.30pm on the 4th Tuesday of each month.

The 2nd Tuesday is generally a business meeting. However the 4th Tuesday is usually less formal with dinner, followed by a guest speaker. Consequently this is a little longer, hence the earlier start time.

Visitors are always welcome, but please contact us in advance, particularly if you wish to join us for dinner.
