Rotary Club of Oxford Spires International Service
Oxford Spires Rotary has been heavily involved in work on International projects since the club was formed in 2003.
Rotary Shoe Box Scheme
As a club, we take part every year in the Rotary Shoe Box scheme. We arrange the filling of 100 shoeboxes every year often by children in schools across England to be filled with gifts for Children and households in Romania. We always organise this project before Christmas so the shoe boxes arrive in Romania just before Christmas. As a club we take great interest in following through on this project, and to involve the local community and businesses to help and donate items to fill the boxes. For more info click on Rotary 'shoebox' appeal.
Of course Romania isn't the only area that shoe boxes can get sent to. Other clubs send them to different countries including Africa and some of our club members were luck enough to get involved with distributing them at schools in Tanzania.
Rotary Aqua Box Scheme
We have also filled an Aqua Box every year since the club's launch. The Rotary Aqua box is another project designed to help poor families in disaster zones around the world. Within the Club, we arrange the filling of the Aqua Box with a supply sanitary of items to help people in a disaster area i.e soap, cleaning equipment, plastic sheeting etc.. and the big plastic box the items are sent in can be used to gather water and be used for cleaning too. International Charity work
Every year Oxford Spires raises money or works for various Internationally based Charities.. We have raised money for Water Aid, Mercy Ships, Adopt-a-Minefield, and Impact. As well as raising money for these Charities, we have also hosted seminars with other local Rotary Clubs for Impact, and Mercy Ships, which raises our clubs profile, and helps to raise more money for the Charites.
Plan International Child Sponsorship
From 2006, our club has sponsored a child through Plan International. Every month during our Club's meal meeting we arrange a Raffle to raise money to sponsor our child, whose name is Vivek, he is 3 years old and lives with his family in rural Northern India. Our money will help with his schooling and his healthcare needs. As a club we send letters and pictures to Vivek, and he has written to us.
International Projects
There are a number of other projects we have been, and are involved in at present. We regularly host guests at our club from all over the world, and take part in our District projects and other emergency disaster projects, such as raising money for the Boxing Day Tsunami at Oxford M40 service station. On a social level, we always organise dinners and nights out with an International theme which always proves popular.
