Events 2012-13

July 2012
Once again we were cooking Onion Bhajees and Lentil Dahl at Truck Festival in Steventon on the 20th and 21st July, keeping the festival goers happy with a continous supply of food.

August 2012
We had a Games Evening at the Red Lion, Islip on Tuesday 28 August.

September 2012
We celebrated the end of Naomi's presidential year with a picnic and boules in Cutteslowe Park on Sunday 2 September.

October 2012
It was "Oxford Spires Invites" on Tuesday 30th October. We met in the village hall in Long Hanborough and invited four guest speakers from local charities as well as friends from other Rotary clubs and from elsewhere. Since our fundraising efforts have been so successful over the last few years, we were able to give each of the four speakers a large donation for their charity.

November 2012
The Red Lion, Islip was the venue for our Children in Need Quiz that raised over £200 for the charity.  Thanks goes to the Red Lion for hosting the event and for some of the great prizes and to Kenneth as Quiz Master.

December 2012
On Friday 14 December a group of members, friends and family visited Woodstock once again for the Club's annual carol singing around pubs, clubs and restaurants to raise money for the President's charity of the year, which this year is Vale House, Sandford-on-Thames.  We would like to thank all the residents and visitors to Woodstock who gave so generously and helped us raise over £300.

February 2013
The Rotary Club of Bicester brought the District's visiting GSE team from District 9670, New South Wales, Australia to join Oxford Spires on Tuesday 12 February for a meal of Fish 'n' Chips and a game of Skittles.  The winners of the skittles was the GSE Team, followed closely by Oxford Spires and then Bicester. Read about the evening and the presentation.

March 2013
The Rotary 1090 District Conference took place from 1 - 3 March in Bournemouth.  Alan Wolstencraft received the Service above Self Award which is believed to be the first time the District has received this. The Conference also raised £3,000 over the weekend for the Laurie Holloway and Montgomery Trust (£780),  Skidz (£500), Wheelpower (£500) and Polio (£1,300)  thanks to the generosity of the clubs.

Katy, Steve, Debs and Karen attended the Charter Night for the Wallingford, Sinodun and District Rotary Club on 19th March.

We were hugely disappointed to have to cancel the 30th World World Pooh Sticks Championships that was planned for Sunday 24th March. Along with much of the country, we have been struck by horrible winter weather, and the river was just too high and fast for our safety boats. We have rescheduled  for 13th October.

April 2013
Katy and Karen helped Wallingford, Sinodun and District Rotary Club with a collection in Wallingford on Saturday 6th April. The team of over 20, each doing one hour shifts at points around the town centre, collected £500.86 for McMillan Nurses.

On Saturday 20 April, members from Oxford Spires and Oxford Isis offered free blood pressure checks to shoppers in Templars Square, Cowley from 9am - 5pm.  They tested the blood pressures of 133 shoppers - 77 required no further action, 55 were recommended to pay a routine visit their GP and 1 was advised an urgent visit to their GP.  It would appear that the state of health in the East Oxford Area has improved since last year when we had 3 Hospital referrals. Read more about blood pressure testing by Rotarians acrosss the UK.

May 2013
On Thursday 16th May, two of us went to the Oxford Gives evening at the Old Fire Station in the centre of Oxford. Read more about the evening.

On Saturday 18th May, thirteen of us went out for dinner in Oxford to celebrate the end of Lesley's year as president.

And we are planning..............
