Rotary Foundation

The Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who shore its vision for a better world. The Foundation started out as an endowment on 1917 and was renamed Foundation in 1928.

The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education, and the alleviation of poverty.
One of the biggest campaigns within Rotary Foundation is the End Polio Now campaign.

Oxford Spires members have participated in Rotary Foundation projects in a number of ways since the club was chartered in 2003:

Matching Grants:

  • We supported the Rotary Club of Haddenham in its work with a group of schools in Moshi, Tanzania. We contributed to the Haddenham project and then a District Grant was added to this. Two of our club's members went to Nkwasangara Primary School in June 2009 and they helped with work to refurbish the school kitchen and to decorate some of the classrooms. District Simplified Grants:

  • One of our first club projects was to plant a garden at Sobell House Hospice at the Churchill Hospital site using money from this district scheme.

Ambassadorial Scholars:

  • In 2010 one of club members, Katy, was responsible for organising the Link Weekend for the new scholars. This is the start of the scholars' visit to the UK and was hosted by our District and was based in Oxford.
  • In 2011/12 Katy is hosting a scholar from the USA. Rakhi Voria is studying for a Master's degree in Comparative Social Policy at the University of Oxford
  • We recently sponsored a graduate to undertake language training in Costa Rica. He also participated in local community projects during his 6 months training.

Group Study Exchange:

  • One of our club members, Karen, is a member of the district's Group Study Exchange Committee. In March 2012 clubs in the district will be hosting five visitors from Argentina. In 2012/13 the Exchange will be with an Australian district, north of Sydney. The incoming group will be in our district in March 2012 and the outgoing group will visit Australia in April 2012.
  • One of our members travelled to Australia under this scheme, before he became a Rotarian WHO WAS THIS?

End Polio Now

  • Oxford Spires has given donations to the End Polio Now campaign. We also planted crocus bulbs in 2010 as part of the Focus on the Crocus initiative across Rotary in Britain and Ireland.
