Guest Speakers 2010-2011

Tim McGovern is one of 36 Oxfordshire Scouts and one of 4,000 UK Scouts between the ages of 14 and 18 to have been selected for the Global Scout Jamboree in Kristianstad, Sweden in July 2011. 38,000 scouts from 120 countries will spend two weeks at the Jamboree.

The Oxford Food Bank was set up in 2009. It collects waste food from supermarkets and wholesalers, food that would otherwise be sent to landfill, and delivers it on a daily basis to charitable groups around the city who provide meals for those in need.

Wendy Dawson gave a fascinating talk about her work at the Ley Community in Yarnton, near Woodstock, where she has been the Chief Executive for 2 ½ years. The Ley Community is an independent registered charity, established in 1971 and that helps people with drug and alcohol rehabilitation.

Rob is studying at Oxford University and is here for this academic year. He told us that when younger he liked to argue and talk in public so he thought about going into Law! He did an Arts degree for one year at Sydney University then transferred to a Law degree. He said that Sydney has the best debating society in the world and as part of this group he competed around the world.

David Horton spoke to the group about the Jubilee Sailing Trust, a charity that was established in 1978 and that has two tall ships on which physically disabled people are able to work alongside able bodied people. 36,000 people have sailed with the Trust, and ages have ranged from 16 to 85.

Sarah spoke to the group about her visit to Southern Africa and Lesotho as part of the Group Study Exchange (GSE) in 2009. The GSE provides opportunities for young professionals (non-Rotarians) to participate in a 4-week exchange visit to another Rotary District in another country.

Colonel Paddy Vernon from the Gurkha Welfare Trust spoke to the club about the Trust’s work supporting Gurkha pensioners who have served in the British Army. He was in the Signals Regiment and first served in Nepal in 1962.

Heather and her dog Edward gave us a fascinating talk and demonstration on the work of a small charity, Medical Detection Dogs. MDD was registered in June 2008 and was started by Claire Guest who had previously been at Hearing Dogs.
